Pang Kai Ting was a soldier in the People's Army serving in a unit commanded by Colonel Fong Chung. His unit was the first to enter Tibet, quickly overrunning the meager resistance put up by the largely pacifist nation. Proudly displaying his new sergeant's stripes he was marching back and forth in front of the monastery that had once held the Dalai Lama. When a girl ran across the street to attempt to reach the marketplace to sell pickled vegetable, he struck her with his rifle and shouted obsenities. A monk in saffron robes approached and softly said to Kai Ting, "beware your anger, greed, and lust for war. They will bring your soul on a path of descent.""Ha! Monk!" yelled the soldier. "There is no heaven, no hell. Buddha was no prophet. He was just a delusional man!""You are too indoctrinated, young man. And you have taken to the indoctrination of the Communist Party. Shall we enter discourse?"But, Kai Ting could not stand the blathering fool and didn't feel like discussing anything. He knew what was real. Gods don't exist. His teacher told him so. The political officer told him the same. He rid himself of the nuissance with the point of his bayonet.Winter came, and it was severe, as always in the Himalayas. Many soldiers fell to illness or frost, Pang Kai Ting amongst them. Only, he did not, or at least he believed he did not. He still walked, he still talked, and people could see and hear him.He didn't notice that he looked like an emaciated corpse or that even his comrades backed away from him in fear, many even muttering prayers of various sorts - Taoist, Buddhist, even Christian and Islamic. They cast him out into the cold. |
