| Background |
Cardinal Syn has lived for many centuries. At first he was a mere centurion in Jerusalem serving Pontius Pilot the Roman Governor. Tiberius was the centurion who led Jesus Christ to the cross for crucifixion. At Golgotha, he saw to the raising of the cross. It was there that the King of the Jews damned him. “Though I go unto my father,” said the Son of God, “I command that thee remain until I return.” Tiberius laughed at this pronouncement as he drove his spear into the side of the Messiah. It was later during a pitched battle with a band of desert bandits that the truth was revealed to the centurion. He was killed by a spear through his heart. Tiberius felt himself dying and then there was an immense pain and he blacked out. He awoke later and there wasn’t even a scar where the spear had pierced him. The rest of the legionnaires had been killed by the bandits, but Tiberius survived. In a daze he stumbled back to Jerusalem. The next day, Tiberius converted to Christianity. Over the centuries Tiberius has been killed several times, but each time there was the pain followed by the blacking out only to find himself alive again. Tiberius grew to understand the curse that had been laid upon him. He was cursed never to die until Judgment Day. Over his long life, Tiberius strived to bring about the Second Coming. He worked within the Roman Catholic Church to bring about the end of the world. He has been known by many different names through the ages. Some important like Cardinal Wolsey and Cardinal Richelieu and countless less well known ones. However, each time he has failed to bring about the end of the world. His latest name has been Cardinal Syn, which he assumed during the chaos of the Second World War. At the time, Cardinal Syn thought that the Germans with his manipulations surely would bring about the end. It was to his great frustration when all his planning went for naught. The only bright spot as he could it was the advent of the Ubers. Cardinal Syn had studied the Ubers in Germany and kept an eye on the activities of such Ubers as Max Uber and the rise of die Kinder and their “father”. This was to be the day of the super-heroes and their antagonists the super-villains. With some manipulation, the Cardinal had a new plan. The Order of Truth, which was also known as the Assassini, was one of the oldest orders in the Roman Catholic Church. Originally known as a part of the Inquisition, it had changed much over the years. Cardinal Syn felt that it was time for the Order to return to its roots. He had himself appointed as Head of the Order. Next the Cardinal set about recruiting a band of Ubers to his secret cause under the Order of Truth. However, even this wasn’t enough for the ancient mastermind. Turning his eye towards France, Cardinal Syn assumed the identity of Monsieur Blanc and proceeded to manipulate three French Ubers known as Trinity. While his latest plan might not work to bring about Armageddon, Cardinal Syn always has another plan in the wings, and another after that. |
| Personality |
Cardinal Syn has lived a long long time. He has seen nations rise and nations fall. His world view is a lot different than most people. Cardinal Syn never acts hastily and always takes the long-term view of any plan. However, Cardinal Syn is the one who believes that he’s destined to lead humanity towards the end of the world. It comforts him to have followers like the members of the Order of Truth and Trinity who he has manipulated so much that they will do exactly he says. With a long term view of things, Cardinal Syn has always kept to the shadows. Even when he was known by famous names, he was always a person behind the power and never the one to actually wield the power. This hasn’t changed over the centuries. |
| Quote |
"There may no man serve two lords which be contrary to other; thine idols be lords of thy malice, corrupters of all good works and enemies to chastity, humility and to bound and friends to all ordure of luxury, of gluttony, of idleness, of pride and of avarice, and my Lord is Lord of soberness that brings the people to the everlasting life." |
| Powers |
Cardinal Syn is one of the oldest of the Ubers. Whether he was truly damned or was just born that way remains to be seen. However, Cardinal Syn believes that he’s damned. The cells of his body are closely linked. Attacks against him are blunted and his flesh will heal itself from any wound. The environment has little effect on him; diseases and poisons will never kill him. Furthermore, his mind is extremely powerful; able to resist almost any mental assault. Cardinal Syn’s most powerful ability is in mental manipulation. With just his voice, Cardinal Syn can seize control of almost any mind that presents itself to him. By exerting himself, he is almost impossible to resist. However, Cardinal Syn has never been one to involve himself in physical combat. His style is to take hold of a foe's mind and turn him against his allies. Given time Cardinal Syn has proven to be able to completely remake a person's mind. |
| Appearance |
Cardinal Syn's appearance is deceiving. To those who haven’t fought against him he is like the kindest priest a person could have ever met. The Cardinal doesn’t wear a costume as such, and looks quite handsome. His usual dress is the robes of his position as a cardinal. |
