Background

Appearing in the aftermath of the 1986 Lake Nyos disaster, Castellan assisted with the evacuation of hundreds of villagers. 1.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide smothered the area around Lake Nyos for 20km, killing 1800 villagers and 3500 livestock. Of those who survived, many suffered respiratory and lung damage or paralysis. Castellan was hailed a hero for saving many lives and from that day on he was a regular figure in Cameroon.

He loved the attention and believed he had found his calling.

Years before, Samuel Mboma had tried to find a place amongst the military but he found the discipline and monotony too oppressive so he left and took up a coaching position in the seaport of Douala. He maintained his physical training and made friends with a retired Englishman, Bartleby Pritchard. Pritchard eventually revealed to Samuel that he had been the Golden Age hero, Castellan, and eagerly showed Samuel his most treasured belonging: a shield bearing the Union Jack and supposedly made of an almost indestructible metal. Pritchard saw in Samuel a hero's spirit and coaxed the young coach to take on the shield as his own. Together they forged the identity of Castellan again, draping Samuel in the colours of his own country, Cameroon. When the disaster at Lake Nyos was revealed, both Samuel and Pritchard saw it as a sign to reveal the new hero.

Pritchard continued to help with Castellan's life after the disaster and the two men share a house in Douala where they conceal a secret 'Hero's Room'.

Castellan has been involved in several international activities, including a battle between several African heroes and a horde of Lemurians off the west coast of Africa. He maintains informal connections with most of the heroes across Africa.

NOTE: In 2002, Castellan was captured and nearly killed by agents of the Sons of Set. He was tortured to the brink of insanity and manipulated into betraying Pritchard, who was murdered. Castellan vanished, but was replaced by the cruel and corrupt Induna.
Personality
Castellan is an enthusiastic and tireless superhero: something he knew deep-down he was destined to become. With the assistance of Pritchard, Castellan has been able to bring happiness to Cameroon and defended it against a series of often bizarre attacks. He is very friendly and never holds a grudge. His reputation for always being available for autographs and interviews has made him popular amongst the young people of Western Africa, as well as the media outlets.

Powers

Castellan possesses a strong shield constructed by unknown materials during the Second World War. The original Castellan, Bartleby Pritchard, has suggested that the shield is made from the metal of Excalibur, but he never seems to be serious and his words are usually exaggerated. The shield is able to protect Castellan from harm as well as being a weapon capable of knocking down opponents at range, or within arm's length. Castellan has also used the shield as a buffer when leaping from the proverbial tall buildings, as has frequently walked away unharmed from falls of up to 30m.

Castellan is a formidable hand to hand combatant, especially when using his shield.
Appearance

Samuel Mboma is an athletic man in his twenties who trains three times a day and focuses his entire life on crime fighting. He wears the colours of the Cameroon flag on protective body armour and carries the newly painted Shield of Cameroon, which was originally emblazoned with the Union Jack. Out of uniform, Samuel wears athletic gear.
