Background

Junior Lieutenant Ivan Semyonovich Dostoevsky, relative peon of the Russian FSB, knows of no blood relation to the famous writer Dostoevsky, yet he has endured constant lifelong torment over the shared name. Even relatively clever people somehow are convinced that they are being original when they ask him how his brothers—the brothers Karamazov—are doing. He's been compared unfavorably to The Idiot. And once he had joined the FSB, the Crime and Punishment jokes became unrelenting.

His former supervisor, Major Beketov, seemed to bear a particular grudge against him for no reason that Ivan Semyonovich could understand except for his last name. Once, deep in his beloved vodka, Beketov confessed that he disliked The Brothers Karamazov—at least the few pages he had read—and it is clear that somehow that antipathy transferred itself to Ivan. Beketov took a perverse delight in assigning him difficult tasks as a result. "Comrade Dostoevsky," he said (Beketov clung to the word "comrade," fading in popularity, as though it could return him to the "good old days" of Brezhnev), "you be the first man through the door." Or "Comrade Dostoevsky, clean up the vomit in the back of the car." "Comrade Dostoevsky, ask that tattooed Lithuanian if he is part of the Organizatsiya." "Comrade Dostoevsky, catalog the entrails." When the opportunity to transfer Dostoevsky to the Russian Dawn group--the most unpleasant, difficult, and dangerous task that Beketov could imagine--presented itself, he did not hesitate, certain that the young man would not survive his first month. Since then, the junior lieutenant has worked as a combination liaison and gofer for Russian Dawn.

Dostoevsky is the grandson of Piotr Semyonovich Dostoevsky, who before his death was a highly placed Communist official and a director of the KGB. Yurodvi has declared the elder Dostoevsky to be an imbecilic oaf, but Dostoevsky still bears pride for his ancestor.

Personality
Dostoevsky has a grudging admiration for the Russian Dawn heroes, and is in particular awe of Yurodvi, who frankly terrifies him. Dostoevsky is firmly convinced that the team will eventually be the death of him, but he enjoys being a part of a relatively uncorrupt organization. In a country whose police have often been forced to survive on graft, Dostoevsky prides himself on having avoided taking a single bribe since transferred to the Russian Dawn group.

A competent, if plodding, investigator, Dostoevsky has some contacts in organized crime and has a knack for nosing out criminal behavior. He also has a tendency to fall into strange and dangerous situations. Yurodvi has casually referred to him as being "a magnetic for strangeness."
Appearance

Slender, short, and perpetually ill-shaven, Dostoevsky has mousy brown hair that is generally mussed, and gently sloped shoulders. His soulful eyes reflect a depth of character not immediately apparent in casual conversation. He generally wears an FSB uniform.
