Background

When his uncle's camper van was struck by a glowing red meteorite in Yellowstone National Park, thirteen year old Johnny Hartley was the only one to survive. His uncle, aunt and three cousins all perished, but parts of the meteorite embedded themselves in his body. The shards were taken out at the hospital but by that time his injuries were healed and he asked to go home. The doctors tried to stop him, but Johnny wouldn't listen, and he discovered he had uberhuman strength and the ability to fly. Within hours he was back home with his parents in Tennessee where they looked after him as his powers subsided. When the authorities caught up with him he was just a normal thirteen year old again with no trace of uberhuman abilities.

Johnny was devastated. He wanted to be a superhero more than anything, and it looked as if his fifteen seconds of fame was going to be exactly that: fifteen seconds.

Several months later, though, he came across some of the red meteorite in the clothes which he has discarded upon arriving home. They had laid under his bed all that time, unnoticed by him or his parents. When he cradled the rocks in his hands he felt the strength return. In the reddish glow his face burst into a smile. Super rocks.

While completing high school, Johnny also embarked upon a career as a teen hero. After moving to Philadelphia to play for the Eagles, Johnny quickly made friends with the Argonauts and joined their team.

Personality
Johnny is idealistic but has a simplistic view of the world. If it doesn't seem to be hurting anyone, then it's good. He loves his life as a professional football player and lives it up on and off the field. And he loves his life as a superhero and adores the attention and accolades. In fact, he makes sure he enjoys the most of both worlds, so much so that he always seems to have a new girlfriend each week in his secret and hero IDs. He is a fun-loving, harmless guy who possess great power but not much vision.

He currently obsesses about Major American and wishes to one day succeed the current hero of that name, although he means the current Major no harm and doesn't really see the rivalry he has established by his obsession.
Quote
"They don't call me The Jack Of Hearts for nothing."
Powers

The red meteorite has imbued Jack of Hearts with uberhuman strength, speed and durability, as well as the ability to fly and run at high speeds. His powers are not detectable as ubergene powers, however, and require him to recharge every 24 hours by holding the remaining shards against his skin. A side effect of the radiation that gives him his powers is that it is also robbing him of his life. Tests indicate that he will die of 'old age' in his early thirties, although Johnny refuses to admit his mortality.

Appearance

Johnny Hartley is a tall, athletic young man with jet black hair shaved very short. He is a serious fan of the Philadelphia Eagles as well as one of their senior players, the result of which is that he very rarely dresses in anything but the team colours.

As Jack of Hearts he wears a costume designed on a playing card motif, with red, blue, black and white colourings. His face is open, but his eyes are covered by blue lenses and his head is covered by a slick cowl.
