Background

Danny Richardson’s birth was relatively boring, even though his parents weren’t. Sally Louis Richardson was the African-American super-heroine known as Dr. Zoom. Sally had gotten her powers when she was almost killed by a drunk driver in a car accident. As her legs healed, they healed to superhuman levels of muscular tension. Prior to Danny’s birth, Sally had been active as Dr. Zoom in both the Americas and Europe. There had been incidents when she had acted to save fellow heroes and there were opportunities to save her from certain death. During one incident, Sally’s life had been saved when the French hero Renard had disabled a strength sapping death ray which Sally had been caught in. After that, Sally and Renard began a periodic correspondence during which they became good friends.

When Danny was born, Sally was concerned about whether he would have any superpowers. He didn’t. Sally and her husband, Michael, thought they had dodged a bullet. They hadn’t. Danny’s powers would begin to manifest in puberty.

But fate had other things in store for the Richardson family. When Danny was eight, his mother was killed fighting the monster Toxico. Michael broke the news to his son that his mother had been a super-heroine and had died protecting people from evil. It took Danny several years, but he began to come to grips with his mother’s death. During this time, Michael Richardson moved his family to the Chicago area and began drinking.

During this time, Danny’s powers began to manifest. His began manifesting powers at age eleven, and they continued to grow over time. Danny began using his speed to help people around his school and his neighborhood. During this time, Michael witnessed his son’s powers and how similar they were to his dead wife’s. It took this revelation to shake the hold alcohol had on Michael. He entered a treatment center and spent three months getting clean.

Danny spent those three months with his maternal grandparents, revealing his speed powers to his grandparents and their daughter’s super-heroine identity. After his father exited the treatment program, Danny’s father and maternal grandparents moved to Philadelphia. There the family helped Danny contact a few organizations, which specialize in training and hiring superhumans. It was then that Danny and the family heard about the death of Renard.

Danny talked with his family, and the entire family, grandparents and all, moved to Italy to give Danny a chance to be a superhero and honor the memory of his mother and her friend.

After working with the Dawnstars for several months, Danny was convinced by Nordkapp Man to return to the United States and attend school. He enrolled at the Numen-Kami Institute in Los Angeles where he is beginning to learn to control his powers among other young ubers his age.

Personality
Danny is an enthusiastic teenaged black man driven by his mother’s legacy to fight crime. He may be characterized as naïve, but he does mean well. His rise to fame has caused some unexpected side effects – namely money and girls, but Danny has tried to take things in stride.

He was unprepared to become a teen heartthrob, especially when he still attends high school for a half-day. Danny tends to be someone who has a black and white view of the world, either it’s good or it’s evil. Eventually, Danny plans to go to college and become known only as Zoom.
Quote
"Dodge this! And this! Ooh! And this BIG one!"
Powers

Kid Zoom is a speedster whose powers are still maturing. He can achieve supersonic speeds, but has problems with turning quickly. He can run on the surface of water and up vertical surfaces. Unlike his mother, his speed powers appear to not be connected with any particular part of his body, so he can whip his arms around to cause minor whirlwinds, a useful distraction. Additionally, he has problems with shoes – namely, they tend to melt under the conditions he tends to put them under. As his speed is still based on traction, this has lead to an unusual ‘slipping’ problem.

His powers initially appeared to be based on a type of super-human muscle tone, except the muscle tone began dissipating ten months ago, and is now totally gone. Yet Danny still has his speed powers. Which raises a very good question: how does the kid run so darned fast?

Appearance

Kid Zoom is a young black man still in his teens. He is 5’6" and only weighs 135 lbs. His costume is a dark purple with silver lightning bolts. He wears gloves, a full-face mask, and white sneakers.
