Background

The Mad Hatter is a mixed up individual. He isn't really 100% whether he is Lawrence Mills (Millsy to his friends) pretending to be the Mad Hatter, or whether he really is The Mad Hatter pretending to be Lawrence Mills. His past is like an open book, except that he is the author and has had so many rewrites that he isn't really sure what happened when he was younger and what he just made up on the spot.

It is likely that the onset of his telepathy had an adverse effect on his sanity.

He has a habit of living out his dreams and pulling in anyone who happens to be nearby. This resulted in a few minor criminal convictions early on, but the Hatter was smart and soon learned to 'play the game'. He took on the Mad Hatter identity (or created the Millsy one to hide his original) and started to have fun with the world around him, which was, in his view, a terribly boring place.

His hijinks created sensations across the East Coast and he lapped up the publicity. He figured that the axiom 'The More The Merrier', applied to him and began to seek out like-minded people with fantastic gifts. He started an intensive 'brain scan' of the local population, picking out those who were either very confused and a little bit barmy, as well as those who showed uberhuman abilities.

His first victim was Harry March, a name that made the Hatter explode into laughter. He recruited the March Hare into Wonderland and then picked up White Rabbit, the Walrus and Dormouse.

It's unclear where he picked up his magical hat, and he changes the story every few days, but the hat is actually a gateway into another dimension which the Hatter has (unsurprisingly) dubbed Wonderland. He uses it as a base of operations and has begun building it in the image of the Lewis Carroll world.

Personality
The Mad Hatter is a little crazy. Sometimes he is crazier than other days, but the one constant in his life is that nothing stays the same. He revels in chaos and enjoys watching people try to deal with the unexpected. He loves manipulating super heroes but will settle for normal folk if he has to. Wonderland usually embark upon crime sprees based more on the Hatter's deluded plans to cause mayhem than on any kind of financial gain. He likes money, of course, but is just as likely to make a bonfire out of one hundred dollar bills as he is to steal it.
Quote
"It's only crazy if you're standing on that side of the mirror, lad. Things look just peachy from here!"
Powers

The Mad Hatter is a telepath, although his powers are driven more by passions than by intellect. If he wasn't so crazy he would make a particularly dangerous foe, but usually his powers manifest themselves in harmless ways. He is able to create havoc in the minds of adversaries, flinging them into halucinations or rewriting their personalities.

In addition to his telepathy, the Hatter also has possession of a magic hat which grants him passage to the other dimension known as Wonderland.

Appearance

The Mad Hatter is fixated with hats, particularly his own large and battered blue hat. He always wears a hat, in and out of costume, and considers himself an expert in the area of fashion (often pointing out fashion faux pas to his friends and passers-by). As the Mad Hatter he wears a red jacket over a t-shirt (the design of which changes from day to day). Underneath his t-shirt he wears a skintight green bodysuit which is made of a protective polymer.
