Mica Angus Daiches was born Thursday, October 14, 1971 at 8:27 a.m. at the Royal Hospital of Edinburgh, Scotland. His father, Tavish Daiches, a career diplomat in the Foreign Office, served at the time as a high ranking liaison to the foreign consulates in Edinburgh. His mother, Rachel Daiches, taught psychology and philosophy at the University of Edinburgh. Over the next four years, Tavish accepted postings in Morocco, Mexico, and finally Spain, where he was appointed Ambassador on February 1, 1980. During all this travel, the family, including Mica's younger sister Shona (born deaf in 1974) remained together as both parents believed that a united family was a strong and happy family.
Their happiness would be short lived. On October 21, 1981 the Prime Minister of Spain hosted a production of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. At 10:15 p.m., at a reception following the performance, Bathe Separatists detonated a bomb. Among the dead were Tavish and Rachel Daiches.
That night, Meadhbh McDougal, Tavish Daiches's chief of staff for more than five years and a close family friend, went to tell the children of the tragedy. She did not find Mica in his room but with his sister. They were sitting on her bed and crying in each other's arms when Meadhbh got there. She looked at Mica and opened her mouth to ask what was wrong when he cried out,
"They're dead!" Later, when asked how he knew, all Mica said was, "I just sensed it."
Though the first overt manifestation of Mica's powers, they had been passively apparent for many years in the way he absorbed language, could sense the emotions of those around him, could even anticipate, it seemed, the thoughts of people.
Over the next eight years, Mica devoted himself to his sister, his mind, and his studies - in that order. He learned to harness his mental powers. After graduating in 1993 from the University of Edinburgh with a Bachelor's in Psychology, he began work on his masters degree (his thesis was entitled: From Innocence to Terror: the Path from Child to Terrorist). After only a month, Mica dropped out and returned to Spain. He stayed one year.
In Spain he sought his parents' killers and, utilizing his father's connections and his mental powers, located the cell of Bathe Separatists that carried out the bombing. Upon them he plotted his revenge, though he tried to call it justice. One by one he would isolate them, learn their secrets, their fears. He would break their minds before he destroyed their bodies. He began with the oldest, a weak and frail old man. Mica plumbed the old man's mind for his deepest fears and brought them to life; the old man's mind frayed and nearly snapped. But as Mica prepared for the final blow, he was suddenly confronted by the image of he and his sister weeping on that awful night in 1981. Mica realized he could not do to another family what had been done to his. He repaired what he could of the old man's mind, and left Spain after anonymously giving the authorities the information he'd obtained (omitting the identity or location of the old man - he'd suffered enough). Unfortunately for Mica, both the Separatists and
Remus took a dim view of his activities. The Bathe Separatists were less than pleased to have nearly a dozen agents arrested and
Remus, operating behind the scenes, had been secretly using several of the Bathe agents to run an important infiltration operation against a Spanish biotech firm doing research in muscle augmentation. That operation was exposed and halted, costing
Remus a few agents in the process.
Mica never told anyone what he did in Spain. It remains his own private hell and his own private lesson. However, his determination to prevent other children from suffering as he had suffered lead Mica to join
Knightwatch (again his father's connections proved invaluable in securing an interview for admission, though he had to earn the post like anyone else). The training was hard for Mica and he missed Shona, but he knew this course was the right one for him. In 2003 he became a full member of
Knightwatch, taking the code name Mind Stalker.
When not on duty, Mica can be found enjoying certain quiet pleasures, such as chess and reading. Occasionally, though, he has been known to hit the bars and clubs, enjoying, perhaps needing, the one night stands that often result. His sister, Shona, has told him he's really looking for something more permanent but is afraid of the implications of such a union. Though he denies this to her, Mica is too much the psychologist to have any real doubts about the truth of the statement.
Mind Stalker has the power to look deep into someone's mind, allowing him to bring their deepest fears to terrifying reality. Also, he can locate individual minds in the midst of great crowds or over long distances. One of his final tests at the before joining
Knightwatch was to locate the mind of his sister, Shona, from London, in Washington, D.C. Moreover, he can stimulate the electrical connections in the brain causing great pain but no permanent damage. His instructors taught him how to "slow" the minds of his adversaries, to the point that they are unable to function, albeit for short times. It has been rumored that he can render himself "invisible" to the people around him. He has been known to walk through a crowded room without being noticed. However, Mind Stalker neither confirms nor denies any special ability in this regard.
During his training for
Knightwatch, the strength of Mind Stalker's mind was assessed. Though somewhat less refined than other minds, Mind Stalker seemed to possess more raw mental strength than most other mentalists known to MI5. However, this extra strength comes at prices. Due to the enhanced operation of Mind Stalker's brain, he is more susceptible to electrical attack, as such attacks tend to cause a spike of bio-electric energy in his brain.
Mica is handsome but unremarkable, standing just under 6 feet (1.8m) and weighing 190 pounds (86.2kg). He keeps his brown hair short and wears a variety of colored contacts so very few know his eye's true color (they are not corrective lenses). On duty, Mind Stalker wears a midnight black costume of an entirely non-reflective material. His experiences in Spain turned him into something of an infiltration specialist. Later training only reinforced this situation.
To offset the midnight black costume he wears on duty, Mica tends to dress in bright, cheerful clothing. He wears lots of yellows and reds and blues, all very tasteful.
