Loca Skala was a simple miner in a pitchblende miner in Czechoslovakia, until an explosion in the mine trapped Loca and six others in the mine. The radioactive properties of the pitchblende eventually killed off the other miners, except for Loca. It took the state owned mine company to come to his rescue. Loca was thought to have died like others, but he wasn't that fortunate.

The pitchblende instead of killing Loca, caused his ubergene to become active. The change was so dramatic that Loca is no longer considered to be human. Loca had become a being of pure radation. Loca was transfered to a special lead-lined boxcar before being shipped off to Moscow. It was in Moscow where Loca met Professor. He studied Loca for a longe time before constructing a suppression belt that reduced the amount of radiation leakage that he now was constantly projecting.

Seeing how Loca could no longer lead a normal life, he was forced to join Oktober. He was kept on a short leash by the KGB until the fall of the Soviet Union. The KGB used him as a shocktrooper. It was the KGB who gave him the code name: Pitchblende.

With the break-up of the Soviet Union and disbanding of Oktober, Loca thought he would be returned home, but instead was thought to be too unstable, both mentally and physically. He was confined to a nuclear power station in Astrakhan. There he was used as a living battery. Not really knowing about the fall of the Soviet Union, Loca as greatly confused about the arrangement. It was Baba Natasha with the aid of Professor who freed Loca from his confinement. However, if it was up to Loca he would've rather stayed at the power station.

Loca has undergone a number of psychological changes due to the loss of his humanity. He's now sure that he has become a monster unable to interact with his fellow man because his very essistance kills everyone. For Loca this was a very bitter pill to swallow. This also makes Loca a cynical person. Nothing ever gets better for him, and he would end his suffering, but so far hasn't found a way to accomplish his death, because he's now pure radioactive energy. Loca would really like to be with people, but his condition makes this impossible. His loneliness eats at him like a cancer.

"Must I?"

Pitchblendes body has become a generator of radioactive energy. Hes' almost completely made up of radioactive material. Without his suppression belt, Pitchblende will poison his surroundings. Those who aren't protected from radiation could die from the exposure from his radiation. Pitchblende is never without his supression belt.

Pitchblende is able to direct his radioactivity to a degree by emitting short bursts of radiation at his foes. Those who aren't immune to radiation or protected from it, suffer radiation burns and sickness. Pitchblende is also able to project a less hazardous burst of radiation which he calls his 'Radiation Blast'.

Pitchblendes' body being made of radioactive energy is lighter than a normal person and by directing his radiation, Pitchblende is able to fly and even generate a dampening field around himself that protects him. The change had caused Pitchblende to develop a complete life support for himself. Pitchblende is now practically immortal, so much more to his horror.

Pitchblende appears to be a mass of glowing black radioactive energy. He still retains a vaguely human shape, but really has very little actual body mass. The only noticeable thing about Pitchblende is his belt, which looks high tech. However, his supression belt isn't very large and it is difficult to see due to the radiation that Pitchblende is constantly emitting. When not trying to draw attention to himself, Pitchblende wears a yellow radiation suit.
