| History of the Qliq | |
| Something unusual occurred on the world, Qliq. A species of bee-like insects gained the ability to confuse other animals. But this was neither camouflage nor a biochemical means, it was not even an ingrained social behavior. Through an accident of Darwinian randomness and selection, they had gained an ability to psionically confuse predators and competitors. That the buzzes were the favorite prey of the Qliq ancestors caused selection of psionic shielding in that race. Over time, both predator and prey (of many types) evolved greater psionic and anti-psionic abilities. The Qliq ancestors also rapidly developed intelligence and willpower in the whole process to the level of sentience of modern Qliq. The Qliq were a tribal people, nomads on the verge of settling into agricultural communities. Then, the Demons invaded. The F'plrara were expanding rapidly from their two core worlds and Qliq happened to be one of the closest habitable planets. The conquest took much longer than expected, largely because the F'plrara were not prepared to deal with a large background of psionic confusion emanating from the fauna of the world.Eventually, they found that they could use the sentient Qliq themselves to dampen the psionic noise. Because of the strong and pervasive religion of the Qliq, the F'plrara won the 'war' by capturing the highest levels of the priesthood in the religious center known as Prophecy. By threatening the gods of the Qliq, the conquerors found that they could have their way with their new subjects.Biologically, the Qliq are human-sized amphibians that resemble frogs in some ways. They are insectivores who favor dining on colony insects like buzzes and grints. Their slime coats enable them to tolerate the moderate levels of radiation and also allows them a level of comfort in water or mud. The Qliq have powerful legs which aid their movement in water, in mud, or on dry land.Socially, the Qliq organize themselves into semi-nomadic clans headed by elders. Each clan also has a number of priests who carry out routine rituals and guide the people spiritually. The priests are, in fact, more powerful than even the elders as their words carry the weight of the gods. Roughly a quarter of the priests of the clan reside in Prophecy as part of The Priesthood or as part of the guards of the priesthood. Wars between clans are not uncommon, but have become rare during the Reign of the Demons. | |
| Area of Operations and Homeworld | |
| Qliq is the first planet orbiting closely around the smallest of the three suns of its star system. The planet has a slightly dense atmosphere with higher atmospheric moisture than most worlds. There are three large continents separate by ocean, the coastal areas of two continents have been settled by the Qliq as well as many of the world's archipelagos. The third continent is further away and untouched by the Qliq, but does have a non-sentient species closely related to the Qliq. | |
| Goals | |
| While most Qliq wish to continue their ways of life, they do support the guerilla movements that desire to return the gods to pre-eminence and cast the demons (F'plrara) away. | |
| Reputation | |
| While the UCW is aware of the existence of the Qliq and their world, they have little in the way of good factual data on either. The F'plrara treat the Qliq as backwards barbarians. They keep a base in a mountain near the center of government and religion, Prophecy. The conquerors are very interested in the fauna of the world as most exhibit some degree of psionic abilities. Similarly, they regularly require the Qliq Priesthood to send them some Qliq to use in military service. | |
