Mercedes Quevedo is the second Peruvian to take on the name Robusteza, although she is not technically a robot but a cyborg. During the 1990s the Peruvian government in conjunction with RobusTECH Industries created an artificial intelligence housed in a nearly indestructible metal casing. The technology was part conventional and part extraterrestrial. The result was Robusteza. 'He' was given the job of protecting Peru from the threats of a modern world and was quickly put to this task by a series of attacks by rogue robots, which turned out to be earlier prototypes of his design. Robusteza proved to be highly intelligent and adaptive, and in front of millions of television viewers despatched the robot enemies with ease and ingenuity.Taking the name Roberto, he was accepted by the Peruvians as their champion and became a public hero as well as government agent. As the years progressed he became more and more sentient and displayed emotions which led to an unusual affair with the daughter of his governmental aide. Mercedes Quevedo was eighteen when she and Roberto
publicly revealed their relationship. She was caught up in the whirl of publicity, but what began as a strange and quirky relationship developed into something deeper.Roberto loved her. And she began to love him, even with his on-again, off-again emotional responses. When Roberto was destroyed during an attack by the uber-supremist group, Junta, the country went into mourning for their hero. Mercedes couldn't cope and attempted suicide only to end up clinging to life with the help of a life support system. The government called in cybernetic expert
Dr Guy L'Estrie and commissioned him to forge a new Robusteza using Mercedes. L'Estrie opposed the idea but did assist with stabilising Mercedes and then bringing her out of her coma. Before he left, the government swooped down on
Mercedes and told her of their plan to use her to bring Robusteza back to the people.Mercedes was still devastated by the death of her robot husband and she agreed to the procedure which would save her life, enable her to walk again, as well as make her something more. L'Estrie was not fully convinced but he was also intrigued with the first Robusteza's technology. He agreed to work on Mercedes and after twelve months of initial and follow-up procedures Mercedes became Robusteza Dos, the second Robot. Her cyborg body was mostly discreet and she was able to pass for normal in the streets if she wanted to, but more and more Mercedes felt detached from the people around her. She could see more than they could and hear beyond their normal conversations. Long after L'estrie left she worked on her own cybernetic developments and added a third arm, using her husband's actual body. She continued his work with the government although her offensive capabilities are more conventional and consist mainly of handguns. This change from the first Robusteza's flashy energy blast attacks has stropped Mercedes from becoming as popular a public hero as her husband, but she is still embraced by the people of Peru, more through a shared grief than any genuine love for her.Robusteza Dos works for the government in a public as well as covert manner. She has also initiated her own investigation into Junta's operations and seeks revenge.
