Ali was the son her father always wanted, and after four daughters, James Cheung had to settle for a tomboy. Ali shunned all things feminine and embraced the teachings of her father and uncle at their San Francisco School of Kung Fu. She stayed at the school after her uncle moved away in shame, and when her father had a stroke she took control of the business side of things as well as occasionally training the students. She turned thirty before she realised it.
On a road trip to the East Coast to clear her mind and plan her future, Ali found herself drawn into a kidnapping ring orchestrated by C.L.A.W. which had grabbed her cousin. She could have turned around and headed back to San Francisco, but she convinced herself that she could make a difference, especially after the police refused to investigate. Ali infiltrated a university laboratory and found the place crawling with agents. She couldn't believe it, but she had been thrust into a martial arts film. She slipped through the security net and watched over one of C.L.A.W.'s experiments from an air conditioner vent.
The experiment involved what looked like medical equipment, she thought, like a catscan chamber. The kid strapped to the bench was screaming. Scientists were taking notes, looking smug.
Ali kicked open the grill and leapt into the room, taking a defensive stance even as the grill crashed into a console sending sparks into the room. The experiment was in meltdown, the magnetic fields began to spike to uncontrollable levels and the room exploded. Ali took cover just before the explosion reached her and felt the stirrings of what she later learned was the ch'i force.
When the debris settled she moved quickly to grab the kid and run for the air vent.
Ali never did find her cousin, but the police found his body and the bodies of twenty four other teenagers at the science facility. She found that she had picked up a stray, though, as the kid she rescued wouldn't leave her side. Worse luck, she thought, the kid was a martial arts fan boy.
C.L.A.W. didn't forget Ali Cheung, either.
While Ali and her new found 'puppy', Jesse Balsman, started an uneasy partnership as amateur crime fighters in Charlotte, C.L.A.W. was planning its revenge. They had a local hero killed on television and framed Ali for the murder. Mockingbird's death was broadcast into the homes of Charlotte residents and became the catalyst for a crackdown on vigilantism in the city. Alison Cheung was labelled the City's Most Wanted.
Ali almost fled the city but Jesse held her back and convinced her to stay and fight to clear her name. Her christened the duo The Sound and the Fury, taking the Fury name for himself. Ali didn't particularly like the name Sound, but did realise Jesse was right about staying to clear her name.
Together they continued to fight crime in the streets of Charlotte while also searching for evidence to clear Ali's name.
She is relatively new to the hero game, but she has trained in martial arts since she was very young and now commands her body as a thirty-three year old. She pursues her connection with the ch'i and realises that as she relaxes she is able to tap further into the source.
Sound is a trained kung fu black belt who has recently discovered the powers of ch'i, which she has begun to explore withy a variety of effects. The experiment which drew Sound and Fury together may have also affected her body and granted her the potential to reach uberhuman physical abilities.
When she channels her ch'i, Sound emits a low humming sound which led Fury to come up with her super hero name. Ali refuses to refer to herself as Sound, however, although she is growing accustomed to its use.
Ali Cheung always had a presence about her: a calmness which was never broken even in the heat of high school bitchiness. She was considered the Ice Princess and she still has the unshakable coolness about her. She is also a no-nonsense woman who does not tolerate the regular trappings of super heroes such as spandex and bright costumes. She accepts that Fury loves the glamour, but she is more concerned with getting the job done.
As Sound, she wears a black bodysuit and domino mask which enables her to move
unencumbered.
