| Working with the KGB and GRU as The Sweeper, he specialized in providing diversions, kidnapping, and assassination. After leaving the control of the Soviet Union, he took the code name 'Spartak' - after the football team for which he had played, which itself was named for Spartacus, the Roman gladiator who led a slave revolt. From 1987 he worked with Dr. Kapitsa as the superhero duo of Spartak y Dinamo which fought often against Oktyabr and other malign organizations. Since Dinamo retired after the end of the Soviet Union, Spartak has worked as a security advisor for international social welfare organizations working in dangerous regions. He sees his superheroic activity as a way to repay the debt that can never be completely repayed - the value of the lives of all the good people that he has killed. After the defeat of the professional Soviet hockey team to the amateur American team in the 1980 Olympics, the Politburo ordered the Sports Bureau to do something. Nearly all the Eastern Bloc athletes soon became guinea pigs for physical enhancement. The majority were boosted with steroids. Nikolai Khanurov, an up-and-coming rookie playing for Spartak Moskva was given something else concoted by Professor Otto von Harz. Using notes from Nazi scientists who were coopted by the Soviet Union at the end of World War II, Professor Harz modified the 'uber-soldier serum' with steroids and other substances into Formula 8Beta4. Of the ten athletes given 8Beta4, two showed no response, two others died of cardia arrhythmias, four suffered from unexplained severe
atrophy. Of the two that showed great physical enhancement, one died within a year during training, and there was Kolya. At that time, he was deemed to be too valuable to continue as a mere football player. He was given training as a superagent. |
