Background

The great-grandson of Professor Quake, Saxon Durant III was born in 2042. He grew to be a respected physicist and doctor, and in 2082 a retro-ubergene virus was unleashed on Earth, resulting in the immediate deaths of 95% of the world's ubers. As the virus spread, Dr Durant, used an experimental time travelling device to travel back to the past and avert the disaster or develop a vaccine.

He succeeded and thrust himself back one hundred years through time to 1982.

Durant knew that he had to discover a vaccine, as it had earlier been revealed that Professor Quake was responsible for unleashing the virus from deep within the planet. It took decades to seep into the atmosphere but once there it became airborne and spread across the planet, killing ubers in a most painful and destructive manner. Scientists in the future suggested the virus was extra-terrestrial, sealed beneath the planet in case the world was over-run by ubers, which garnered a heated debate over the very origins of the ubergene.

Dr Durant didn't really care about the origins of the virus or the uber gene. He just wanted to neutralise it and save thousands of lives in the future.

He created a secret identity, taking on the name Justin Thyme: a biophysicist. He also became Tempus, a part-time hero of the 1980s. During this time he discovered another version of himself: a newborn who appeared at the same point he originally arrived in 1980. Durant had damaged his own timeline and every twenty years a new Saxon Durant III was born. During the 1990s Tempus retired and the younger Durant took over. But the Durants' real goal was to establish the Southern Cross International organisation and discover the vaccine to the retro-virus. Southern Cross International was a success and drew experts from several fields, most notably medicine, ubergetics and advanced technologies.

In time, Tempus retired again, passing the temporal ring to the younger version, but not before he established the Southern Knights - the team that would include his great grandfather Professor Quake.

Durant has been searching for the antidote for over twenty years and has developed some serums which provide a 60% protection from the virus, but perhaps the best results of his research have been the development of other antidotes and treatments. Southern Cross International has become a leader in future technologies and advanced medicines. And they have contributed to the alleviation of disease in Africa, the Pacific, South-East Asia and South America.

Durant continues his work and realises he still has over 70 years to find a solution, although he wonders what will happen when his original body dies.

Currently there are four Saxon Durant IIIs: aged 64, 44, 24 and 4.

Note: In some timelines, Tempus actually becomes a super villain and returns to the present day to take control of the world. On the few occasions that this occurred, the Southern Knights were able to send him back to his own timeline.

Personality
Durant has lived for thirty eight years in the future and another twenty six in the 'present', making him over sixty years old. Since the timestream was manipulated, however, more Durants seem to be appearing every twenty years effectively creating clones of his body. He has adapted relatively well to his pseudo-immortality and has dedicated his lives to the pursuit of knowledge and improved medical treatments. He co-ordinates Southern Cross International from behind the scenes. He keeps an eye on his grandfather, the first Saxon Durant; as well as Professor Quake who has become suspicious of Southern Cross International. Quake believes there is some kind of conspiracy involved, and Durant worries that the truth may come out.
Quote
"Things change, and that is exactly what I am counting on."
Powers

Durant possesses a single temporal ring which is in dire need of future era repairs. It still functions but is restricted in the variety of effects. It can no longer project Durant through time, but does allow him to create and manipulate 'temporal fields'. He has been known to stop time over a large area but is usually limited to affecting time in small, localised spheres. The ring also allows him to fly and protects him from the rigours of space.

Appearance

Saxon Durant III is an easy going man who possesses over sixty years of experience from two points in time. He currently has four versions of himself in the one era. The eldest is the original and is aged 64 and balding. The next is 44 and takes control of most of Southern Cross International's day to day business. The next is 24 and is the current Tempus, wearing a black and blue costume styled on the earlier versions of the hero. The youngest is four years old and is in the care of the 44 year old Saxon's wife, Cassandra.

Durant wears suits at work and is rarely out of the Southern Cross International headquarters in Sydney.
