Cesar Ibanez was one of Spain's most successful bullfighters until a miscalculated step resulted in his bloody demise. His daughter, Maria Fernanda, was left in the cold company of her step-mother who had never shown anything but open hatred for the girl. Within weeks of her father's death, Maria Fernanda was sent to the Santo Miguel Boarding School in Andorra. She didn't even get the chance to pack her things.

Maria Fernanda seethed.

She acted out against the teachers and the nuns. They counselled her, thinking that her actions were linked to her father's death alone. The step mother had paid the school well to keep the girl there regardless of her behaviour. The money must have been impressive because Maria Fernanda was soon getting into fights with the other girls and, more often than not, other boys. She drew blood from the noses of royalty, corporate money and the offspring of movie stars. She developed a reputation. No one spoke to her.

She withdrew. There was nothing left for her in this world...

And then she battled a costumed kid outside the walls of the school. He threw rocks at her which she dodged. She swung at him with a knife, but he erected rock shields. Soon enough he pinned her to the ground and smiled at her, pulling off his mask. It was the prince - a spoilt kid in her year at the school. They told each other about their families, their lives and their desire to fight back.

Maria Fernanda wanted to kill her step mother. Luis wanted his parents to need him, or to at least acknowledge him.

Through this wanting a team was born: New Wave.

Veronica, named after a bullfighting maneuver, is the coldest of the New Wave. She is the one most capable of killing, and views her involvement in the team as a step towards becoming a formidable assassin. Her first priority is to dispatch her step mother in the hereafter, and after that she plans to wreak havoc at the school. She is fiery, passionate and driven by hatred.

However, every moment she spends with New Wave seems to be softening her. She has even shown the ability to laugh at Beezle Bob's lame jokes, and to spend quiet time with Luis, just appreciating the views of his homeland. She feels that, perhaps, she has fallen in love with him, although he only has eyes for the Sorceress.

"Take a number, perdedor. I'll get to you."

Veronica has no powers except anger. She is driven by her hatred for her step mother and all the other adults who have turned their backs on her since her father's death. Her father was her closest friend and they spent hours every day together, training or just hanging out. He was a celebrity but he always had time for Maria Fernanda. She possesses knowledge of bullfighting that no other girl her age could possibly have, and compliments this knowledge with martial arts training and a wicked spring-loaded knife.

Maria Fernanda is an attractive young woman with olive complexion and dark haunted eyes. She is bold and wears what she likes, often bypassing the uniform for casual attire. As Veronica, she wears a short white t-shirt which exposes her midriff, black pants and high boots; but her most dramatic affectation is the bright red bullfighter's cloak which she uses to distract her opponents during combat. She wears a yellow bandana and a white mask to conceal her identity, although her mannerisms make the discovery of her identity quite probable.
